Our Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need to be a member to shoot?

No, anyone is free to come and shoot but you must book in advance.

We do, however, have a members club, “The Calibre Club”. For £25.00 per month, members enjoy a range of discounts and specially selected partner offers.

Do you need a licence to shoot at Purdey at the Royal Berkshire?

No. But if you’re bringing your own gun, you should always travel with your shotgun certificate.

What do I need to bring?

We can provide you with a gun, hearing and eye protection, and cartridges as required.  You are welcome to bring your own gun and cartridges but you will be charged an extra fee if you use your own cartridges.

Please note that we do not allow steel shot, only Fibre Wads with a maximum load restriction of 28 grams will be permitted.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

Yes. You must give us 48 hours' notice if you are cancelling a booking, otherwise, you will be charged.

Can I go out and shoot unaccompanied?

No. Even if you’re just having a practice session, you’ll always be accompanied by one of our experienced instructors.

Do I need to book or can I just turn up and shoot?

You do need to book. We run a diary system and our instructors are booked out by the hour. If you would like to shoot on a Saturday, we advise booking two to three weeks in advance. During the week, we often have slots available at shorter notice. But to avoid disappointment, we suggest you always book in advance.

At what age can you start to clay pigeon shoot?

There is no legal age limit. Children need to be old enough to hold a shotgun and able to understand the importance of proper safety (this is usually around 10 years old).

If you want to start your child in the sport, we suggest booking them an individual lesson with one of our instructors.

Can you practice at the School or do you need to book a lesson?

Yes, an experienced shot can come and practice but a member of our team will still accompany you. They’ll ensure you can access the full range of stands we offer.

Can I request a specific instructor?

For a lesson, yes. But for practice rounds, while we try our best to honour your request, we can’t always ensure that they’ll be available. You can be assured that all of our team members are knowledgeable and exceedingly experienced.

Is there a dress code?

No but we do ask that smart casual attire is worn. We advise people to wear comfortable outdoor clothing and footwear that’s suitable for the weather on the day.

Can someone come and watch?

Yes, as long as they wear the relevant safety equipment provided and follow the instructors' advice on where it is safe to stand.

Is the lesson cancelled if it rains?

No! Clay pigeon shooting is an outdoor sport and unless conditions are deemed to be dangerous (fog or lightning), we carry on.

Will the shooting equipment hurt me?

Our instructors will choose the appropriate calibre shotgun for you and show you how to hold the gun correctly. We also use custom-loaded low recoil cartridges.
