The Purdey Awards for Game and Conservation encourages entries from all types of shoot which are able to demonstrate commitment to outstanding and imaginative conservation projects. Winners will share in a prize fund valued at £15,000 and receive recognition in Gold, Silver and Bronze categories. Winners are announced, and prizes presented, at a ceremony to be held in Purdey’s Long Room in November 2013.

When ordering a hand-crafted Purdey shotgun or rifle, you are joining a tradition of gunmaking excellence that goes back nearly two centuries. Our founder, James Purdey, was apprenticed as a gunmaker in 1798. After joining master gunsmith Joseph Manton, he went on to forge a gunmaking dynasty that would surpass all others. A Purdey ‘Best’ gun is a gun that cannot be bettered. No extra time or expense can bring further improvement. From the very first measurement, it has been designed to be perfect.

The Purdey tradition began in 1798, when, as a boy of 14, James Purdey started an apprenticeship with his brother-in-law.

On completion he joined Joseph Manton, then England's greatest gunmaker. In 1814 Purdey set up on his own, selling flintlock rifles, guns and duelling pistols from his shop near Leicester Square.

Our shotguns and rifles epitomise the 'Best' London tradition, made using tools and techniques perfected more than a century ago. Every Purdey craftsman is a master of his art, creating an object of beauty that is built to endure.
