The Macnab Challenge Panerai for Purdey Pocket Watch

The myth and spectacle of the Macnab Challenge comes to light in a one of a kind Panerai for Purdey pocket watch. Most avid outdoorsmen will have heard of the Macnab story, but for those less familiar with the challenge, we will divulge a bit about its history. The modern day challenge was inspired by John Buchan in his novel ‘John Macnab’. In his story, three gentlemen, restless with the day in the countryside, decided to set a challenge – to poach a salmon or a stag from a Scottish estate and return it undetected. Since then, the challenge has evolved into an attempt to stalk a red stag, bag a brace of grouse and catch a salmon all in the same day from dusk to dawn. For the sporting gentlemen looking for a piece of old world elegance, the Panerai for Purdey pocket watch brings together fine craftsmanship and sportsmanship in a one-off collector’s piece. The white gold watch has remained faithful to its vintage Panerai models by featuring a substantial hand-woven movement characterised by hand-polished bevelling, measuring 6.3mm in thickness with a 16 ½ lignes diameter. The mechanical movement measures p.3001/10 calibre with the pocket watch allowing for a 3 day power reserve, visible from the indication via the see-through sapphire crystal watch back. In keeping with the elegance of Panerai history, the pocket watch dial remains in the classic Panerai style with a remarkable feature of two superimposed discs enclosing a layer of ecru Super-LumiNova. This section allows the hour markers to shine with exceptional brightness even under conditions of poor light. The back of the watch can open to reveal the finish of the P.3001/10 calibre, with two skeletonised barrels and chamfered polished angles. The sophisticated wheelwork and gilded engraving is visible from the skeletonising, an art that collectors of fine watches will admire. In addition, the watch is impressively water-resistant, guaranteed to resist a pressure of 5 BAR or up to 50 meters. The pocket watch comes with a 40cm white gold watch chain, inspired by nautical towlines. As well as this, the watch comes in a Panerai wooden box, however, Purdey have also commissioned an additional and spectacular box designed as a desktop holder for the watch. The Panerai for Purdey Discovery Box is refined and subtle, displaying hints of the Macnab Challenge through inlay. It was crafted by Little Halstock by one single master artisan taking over 300 working hours. The engraving on the outside of the curved Victorian style box features Purdey 12-Bore cartridges, bullets and a fly paying homage to the grouse, stag and salmon elements of the Macnab. The box is beautifully crafted from European walnut with a lacewood bottom lid. The Purdey logo at the front of the piece is crafted from rippled sycamore, providing an iridescent glimmer when under light. Inspired from the mechanical movement of a watch cog, the box seamlessly opens and closes via precise engineering. Lastly, to add functionality and ease of use, the box features a week calendar made of walnut and sycamore marquetry allowing for a sterling silver and gold miniature shotgun peg to be moved as required to determine the last time the watch was wound, saving the disturbance of having to open the watch’s back case to check the remaining power reserve. It has only been since the First World War that wearing wrist watches has become fashionable, therefore it is no surprise that a pocket watch remains one of the most sophisticated accessories. It is now rare to come across a Panerai pocket watch, with the Purdey for Panerai 3 Day White Gold Pocket Watch being the only one available in England. This one of a kind piece combines the subtle elements of three sporting disciplines displayed on an elegantly crafted box, with three detailed engravings of all sportsmen’s icons on the watch itself. It is truly a collectable and unique piece. Like the Purdey bespoke gun engraving, special commissions can be organised and a variety of engraving options are available.
