Macnab Challenge Marquetry Discovery Box
This one-of-a-kind box is designed to give a hint of the three independent tasks that make up the Macnab challenge. Intricately portrayed in marquetry is a set of bullets for the stag, cartridges for the grouse and a fly for the salmon. A thistle nods to the Scottish origins of both the challenge and the Purdey brand.
The mechanical cogwheel allows the seamless opening and closing of the box and has been engineered in England from a solid block of brass and clearly recalls the cogs of a watch movement. The watch well sits in the middle, lined with Audley Red Alcantara.
Once open, you find a Scottish landscape in the upper lid, as well as a weekly calendar. A small gold and silver cartridge can be placed to indicate the day of the next winding of the pocket watch which operates with a three-day power reserve.
The box was crafted by one master craftsman and took over 300 hours to complete. No detail was spared and it serves both as a case for the pocket watch, but also a decorative stand for a desk, allowing the watch to dually serve as a desk clock.
