The Purdey Sporting Clays Gun
James Purdey the Founder had one aim: to build guns without compromise. Although Purdey’s reputation has largely been based on game guns, they have built guns for competitive shooting since their foundation, including single barrel trap guns between the 1920s and the 1970s.
The discipline of Sporting Clays has become increasingly popular over the last decade. Purdey, with its focus on balance and handling, are well-placed to meet the exacting requirements of the participants, and now offers a shotgun dedicated to Sporting Clays shooting.
The new gun was designed by taking the award-winning Purdey Trigger Plate design – with its detachable trigger mechanism – and combining it with the features of a high performance Sporting Clays shotgun. The specifications were developed by an in-house team, together with the assistance of Don Currie, professional shotgun coach, gun fitter and Chief Instructor of the US National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA).
As Mr. Currie says, “The balance and ‘pointability’ is every bit as good as we hoped, giving a quick, responsive feel, which is so essential for a Sporting Clays shotgun”.
The Purdey Sporting Clays Gun incorporates a 9.3mm raised rib (tapered 11mm to 7mm), a higher comb and an ergonomically designed grip and palm swell. The gun’s features have been designed to a high standard, with specific attention to the all-important balance and handling. The specially designed stock and the grip specifically assists the shooter’s mount and reduces the felt recoil as much as possible. The top rib is ventilated with a stylish “attacking” formation, and the side ribs have an angled, double vented design to match.
The Sporting Clays Gun is a fully bespoke gun with the customary range of options, including barrel length, chamber length, choke configuration, stock dimensions, engraving, and action finish. These allow the customer to build a perfectly-fitted gun, suited to both their individual taste and, most importantly, their style of shooting.
The new Purdey Sporting Clays gun will soon be displayed at Audley House in London and available for test shooting across the country. We will also be working with our network of international partners.
The shotgun is currently available in 12-Bore, and a 20-Bore model is in development, with prices starting from £65,000 + VAT.
