When was James Purdey & Sons Ltd founded?

We were founded in 1814, in premises near Leicester Square. Please take a moment to read more about our history.

What kind of guns do you make?

We make both rifles, and shotguns. Our shotguns are available in either side-by-side or over-and-under construction.

Purdey side-by-side shotguns are built on the famous Beesley self-opening action, patented by Frederick Beesley in 1880. Our sidelock over-and-under guns are built on the Woodward action, originally patented in 1913. Their design incorporates barrel lumps on either side of the lower barrel, giving a slim, elegant, and extremely strong action. We also make the Purdey Sporter, which is built on a trigger-plate action which is ideal for both game and clay shooting.

What is the delivery time for a new gun made to order?

On average it takes between 18 and 24 months to complete a Purdey shotgun or rifle. The precise length of time will depend upon your  individual requirements. A Purdey Sporter could be available within 8 to 10 months.

Can you value my gun?

At James Purdey & Sons Ltd, we hold the most complete set of sales ledgers and Dimensions Books of any ‘Best’ London gunmaker.

We are therefore very well placed to value Purdey shotguns and rifles for insurance or advise on a guide price for sale. .

It is very difficult to value a gun unseen, so for a reliable valuation, please do bring your gun in to Audley House. If that is not possible, by giving us your Purdey’s serial number, we can give a very rough guide to a range of potential values.

I have an Atkin/Beesley/Evans ‘from Purdey’ gun. Can you give me its history?

In the nineteenth century, it was common practice for former employees of prestigious gunmakers to use the phrase ‘from’, followed by their ex-employer’s name, when setting up their own firms.

Henry Atkin, Frederick Beesley and William Evans were each once employed by James Purdey & Sons, and established their own businesses in 1877, 1879 and 1883 respectively.

We do not hold the records of their guns. Nonetheless it may be possible to obtain a history of an Atkin gun by contacting Atkin, Grant and Lang, or of an Evans gun by contacting William Evans.
